If you think walleye lures, the first things that come to mind are jigs and body baits. Walleye anglers on the great lakes have been changing that stereotype with success on the big water using spoons. The reason is clear. A silver spoon imitates a wounded baitfish. Especially on larger waters where there is a resident population of open water walleye targeting smelt, shad or Alewives, the walleye lures of choice are a silver or gold spoon with varied color accents that depend on the forage base and water coloration or discoloration if you prefer.
If you refer to the Williams ice jig page you will see we mention that the Williams ice jig held the world record for walleye through the ice for a number of years before being recently beaten out by a well deserving 20 plus lb trophy. If you prefer to vertically jig for walleye as many people do remember to keep some Williams spoons in your assortment of walleye lures. The Quick silver walleye lures, Wabler, Bully, Dartee and Whitefish are all good jigging spoons depending on the action and depth you are after and or targeting. Deeper water and current situations will require heavier lures like the; Wabler, Whitefish or Bully. Shallower and calm water conditions can be worked using lighter spoons like the; Quick silver walleye lure, Wabler Lite or Dartee. As a general rule of thumb walleye prefer a spoon baited with a piece of night crawler or minnow head which is often more productive than the entire minnow. The Wabler is a favourite on Bay de Noc in Michigan. Use the Quick silver as an attractor with the hooks removed and followed by a crawler harness. The quick silver has a darting action that makes the crawler move and has less drag than the conventional spinner rigs with harness.
Size C60 is an excellent jigging spoon on open or hard waters. The size C70 at 4Œ" is a perfect imitation of most mature baitfish species. The larger C80 and C90 sizes are popular great lakes salmon lures as well as proven big lake trout and northern pike favorites. They are regularly used as bait or smaller attractors or dodgers. The unique shape of the walleye lures, offers less resistance and the brilliant flash of the precious metal finish attracts fish from greater distances.
